Musculo-Skeletal Changes During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, your body undergoes massive physical changes. But what does this mean for your musculoskeletal system? Here are a few main points to be aware of:
Postural Adaptations and Symptoms
· Due to a change in the centre of gravity (the growing bump will be bringing it forwards and downwards), your body will adapt in order to keep you upright.
· A forward head position, an increase in lumbar and cervical (lower back and neck) extension may contribute to: headaches, neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, sciatica.
· Thoracic spine (upper back) flexion and scapular protraction (shoulders rolling forward) may contribute to: upper back pain and stiffness, ribcage pain, trapped nerves in the arms and hands
· Anterior pelvic tilt, extension of the knees may contribute to: lower back pain, hip, thigh and glute tightness, weakness in the glutes and hamstrings, tight and overworked shin and calf muscles.
· A drop in foot arches can contribute to: foot pain, plantar fasciitis, changes in gait, knee and ankle pain.
Relaxin
Levels of this hormone spike towards later stages of pregnancy in order to loosen the joints and ligaments in the pelvis to allow for childbirth. However, this hormone affects connective tissues all around the body, and can even make some expectant mothers hypermobile. This can lead to an increased risk of tendon, muscle and joint injury. This can also include SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction).

In addition you may be given advice on exercise to help maintain strength and mobility going forward in your pregnancy.
