Antenatal Classes

Melinda Webb, founder of Beattie Street Health, has worked in holistic medicine for over 10 years.  She has been a Calmbirth Educator since 2016 and has worked in the field of birth as a Doula and Antenatal Educator since 2008.

Melinda's innovative approach comes from her training as one of Dr Joe Dispenza's Health Practitioners (1 of 300 in the world). This sets her apart in the wellness community and as a practitioner and educator. She loves teaching the Calmbirth to instil positive change that you feel and see within your world becoming a parent.

THE VALUE OF CALMBIRTH

Calmbirth encourages a synthesis of ideas and experiences. Attending a class with Melinda forges a more open and trusting place for learning, allowing you to explore how you would like to welcome your baby into the world and work with your care team.

 WHY CHOOSE CALMBIRTH WITH MELINDA?

Melinda is a professional with years of experience, a Dr Chinese Medicine, Dr Joe Dispnza Health Practitioner, Buteyko Breathwork Instructor and Birth Doula. She teaches other Calmbirth educators Acupressure that is within the course. She is the founder of Beattie Street Health Studio in Balmain. Her classes embrace the multiple ways of learning, nurturing, and supporting those to flourish with Calmbirth’s information.

Melinda knows through experience birth is natural, yet its effects can be highly variable for all involved. Hence, her teaching provides guidelines for establishing a therapeutic relationship that promotes change. Looking through the ‘medicalisation’ of birth and adopting a more optimistic viewpoint helps to change the perspective of birth, giving those supporting an ideal position to help and understand the journey, enabling them to enter with the ability to advocate and assist when required.

WHAT YOU TAKE FROM A CALMBIRTH CLASS

Calmbirth creates a language around feelings, allowing you to integrate the next steps of where you want to be—fostering change to inquire about what matters to you and how to use the information learnt. Melinda helps you to envisage your birth and family through planning and communication.

The course is hands-on; as a general guide, you can adapt to each phase of labour.  Calmbirth enhances the knowledge you may already have with breathwork, covering the physiology of birth and the frameworks used within the birthing system.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM MELINDA

In addition to professional support given within the class, Melinda provides encouragement and guidance as an educator with a follow-up session at around 36 – 38 weeks. Breathwork is revisited to ensure you feel confident, covering bodywork and acupressure, which is beneficial for enhancing labour and birth. Melinda works alongside other professionals within the industry, creating accessible communication with your care provider if you require any further help.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE  CALMBIRTH CLASSES HELD?

Antenatal classes are often seen as a way to prepare for childbirth, and Calmbirth goes further, helping expectant parents to understand and prepare for the psychological aspects of birth. The Calmbirth method seeks to instil a sense of calm and confidence in parents, helping them approach childbirth positively.

The core principle is that birth is a natural process that should be respected and celebrated. By attending Calmbirth classes, parents can learn breathing and relaxation techniques to help them remain calm during labour. In addition, they will gain a greater understanding of how the mind and body work together during childbirth.

You will also have the opportunity to practice these techniques so that you are confident in using them when the time comes. In addition, you will learn about the different stages of labour and what to expect so that you can be prepared for anything that might happen. By the end of the class, you should feel more confident and excited about welcoming your new baby into the world.

Melinda teaches classes in the studio at Beattie Street Health, with a capacity of only ten couples. The classes provide ample time for questions and the benefit of meeting like-minded people who can become lifelong friends!

We cater for all dietary requirements with fresh and wholesome food prepared onsite.

For over 10 years, Melinda has been helping people to improve their health and wellbeing.

Pregnancy is a beautiful stage of life. Bringing a child into the world is a personal and intimate experience.

What is Calmbirth®

The Calmbirth program was founded by the wonderful Peter Jackson, who was influenced, in part by the work and beliefs of British obstetrician Dr Grantly Dick-Reid, who published Childbirth Without Fear in 1942.

Partners or those supporting throughout, learn how to provide a calm and encouraging environment for labour, during birth and beyond.

The support people discover the best ways to protect the birth space and be the conduit between the mother and her care team. Equally important, they learn Calmbirth® breathing techniques and ways to gently support with hands-on care through massage, acupressure and bodywork.

Melinda has worked with women and their partners for the last 14 years; she knows that regardless of daily life, each person requires support and respect and feels that their needs have been met. This is a time of great change in emotions, the body, relationships, work and finances; however, none of this should change the beauty of birth.
