Weaving Three Ways of Listening to the Body
The Body Carries More Than We Realise
Our stories live inside us. The beautiful, the difficult, the unresolved and the untold all become part of the way we inhabit ourselves. Through years of working with the body, Melinda Webb has come to understand that people do not experience life only through the mind. They experience it through flesh, bone, breath, chemistry, emotion and memory. The body often knows before the conscious mind does, and over time it can become very good at carrying what has not yet been understood, expressed or released.
Looking Beneath the Symptom
This is why Melinda has always been interested in what sits beneath the symptom. People come into clinic with neck pain, back pain, headaches, hormonal changes, poor sleep, gut issues, fatigue or a body that simply feels uncomfortable, yet the physical presentation is rarely the whole story. Sometimes, as the body begins to change, something else begins to move with it. Relationships shift, decisions become clearer, emotional responses soften and an old pattern that once felt immovable no longer has quite the same hold.
Chinese Medicine and the Root
Chinese medicine has understood this interconnectedness for thousands of years. Rather than treating the branch alone, it looks for the root. Qi, Blood, the organs, the channels, constitution, emotion and environment are all considered part of one living, responsive system, constantly adapting to what is happening within and around the person.
Coherence, Change and the Nervous System
Melinda’s work with Dr Joe Dispenza has given her another language for this. Through neuroscience, neurochemistry, coherence and the relationship between thoughts and emotions, she has explored how repeated internal states can become familiar to the body.
The nervous system adapts to what it experiences repeatedly, and sometimes people continue to organise themselves around something that has already passed. When greater safety, presence and coherence are created, older patterns can begin to lose some of their charge.
Listening Through the Spine
Spinal Energetics offers another way of entering that conversation. Melinda sees the spine not simply as structure, but as part of the way the body has adapted to life. It has bent, braced, compensated and carried each person through many versions of themselves.
When old patterns begin to soften, the change may be physical, but it can also be emotional, energetic and deeply personal.
Three Different Maps
For Melinda, these approaches are not separate. Chinese medicine gives one map, neuroscience another, and Spinal Energetics another way of listening. Breath runs through all of them, reminding us that the body is rhythmic, responsive and extraordinarily intelligent.
Tending the Conditions for Change
She often describes this work through the image of tending a garden. A plant is not pulled into growth. The soil is tended, light and water are provided, obstructions are removed, and the intelligence within the plant is trusted to do what it knows how to do.
Perhaps this is what listening to the body really is: not trying to control it, but creating the conditions in which something new can emerge.
