The Fertile Ground: The inner landscape from which we grow

The landscape from which we grow

There is a quieter place within us that can be difficult to hear when life is constantly moving. We spend our days responding to relationships, responsibilities, conversations and the world around us, gathering experiences that gradually become entwined with how we think, how we feel and ultimately how we act. Over time, these experiences become part of our internal landscape, shaping the way we meet ourselves, our bodies and the life unfolding around us.

This is our fertile ground: the place from which we grow, create, change and become.

Think of the floor of a forest. Beneath the canopy, life is continually reaching towards the sun, yet what we see above ground is only part of the story. Below is an intricate landscape of roots, moisture, microorganisms and nutrients, quietly supporting everything that is growing above. The ground can be rich and nourished, capable of supporting new growth, or it can become dry and depleted, needing water, nourishment, light and care before something new can take root.

Perhaps we are not so different.

We often focus on what we want to change in our outer landscape. We want a different relationship, a new career, a family, a healthier body, a calmer home, greater purpose or simply to feel differently within the life we already have. We look towards the thing we want to create and ask: How do I get there?

But perhaps there is another question worth asking.

What is the inner landscape from which I am trying to create it?

Our inner and outer landscapes are continually meeting. The conversations we have, the relationships we choose, the environments we spend time in and the way we move through our days influence how we feel within ourselves. At the same time, our patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving influence the choices we make, the conversations we enter into, what we notice and how we respond to the world around us.

How we think, feel and act does not exist separately from the life we are creating.

This is where fertile ground becomes about far more than fertility. It is about creation.

Perhaps you are creating a family. Perhaps you are contemplating a change in your work or relationship. You may be building a new home, beginning a business, moving through a transition, wanting to feel healthier, or simply recognising that the person you have been no longer quite fits the life you want to live.

Sometimes we know that something needs to change long before we know exactly what that change will look like.

And sometimes we keep trying to create something new from very familiar ground.

Nourishing the inner landscape

So how do we begin tending to the ground beneath us?

Perhaps it begins by becoming present enough to notice it.

Where does your attention go each day? What thoughts do you continually return to? How does your body feel when you wake in the morning? What emotions have become familiar? What are you surrounding yourself with? Where are you holding on, and where might there be space to soften?

The breath offers us one way back. The breath brings our attention back to this moment. Not yesterday. Not the conversation we keep replaying. Not what should have happened. Not everything that needs to happen tomorrow. Here. Now.

There is something deeply nourishing about returning to the present moment and becoming curious about what is actually happening within us. Rather than continually asking the body and mind to do, achieve, fix or work something out, we create moments in which we can simply listen.

From there, we may begin to see our landscape differently.

Creating something new

This relationship between the inner and outer world has become an important part of Melinda’s work.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has long viewed health through relationships within the whole person rather than isolating one part of the body from another. Nourishment, rest, emotion, environment and our relationship with the world around us all form part of this broader understanding.

Melinda’s continuing work with neuroscience, breath and mind-body practices, including her work as one of Dr Joe Dispenza’s Inner Health practitioners, has brought another dimension to this foundation. Central to this work is an exploration of the patterns through which we repeatedly think, feel and act, and what becomes possible when we bring conscious attention to them.

Because creating change is not simply about deciding what we want our outer life to look like.  It also invites us to become curious about who we are being while we create it.

If we want something new in our outer landscape, what might need nourishment within the inner one? What thoughts are supporting the life we want to create? What familiar patterns might we be carrying forward? What environments support us? What relationships nourish us? Where might we need different boundaries, different choices or simply a different way of meeting ourselves?

This is where the fertile ground becomes the basis of becoming, with this question:

What am I nourishing within myself, and around myself, for something new to grow from?

Through Somatic Acupuncture, Melinda brings together Chinese Medicine, breath and energy work, creating space to quieten the mind, soften into the body and become more aware of the patterns held within us. Spinal Energetics offers another pathway into awareness, movement and connection, while Melinda’s broader work with breath, neuroscience and creating change explores how we can begin moving beyond familiar ways of thinking, feeling and being.

The fertile ground, then, is not simply about conception. It is your life. It is the inner landscape of your thoughts, emotions, body and attention, and the outer landscape of your relationships, work, home, environment and choices. One is continually influencing the other.

Before we focus only on what we want to grow, perhaps we can become curious about the ground from which we are asking it to grow.  Perhaps change begins there, not by forcing the next chapter into existence, but by tending to the fertile ground from which it can emerge.

Explore Your Fertile Ground

If you recognise that something in your life is ready to change, you do not necessarily need to have the answer yet. Sometimes the beginning is simply creating the space to notice what has become familiar, what is asking for nourishment and what you would like to create differently.

Melinda works individually with clients through Somatic Acupuncture, where breath and mind-body practices combine to explore the relationship between the inner landscape and the life being created around it.

About Melinda Webb

Melinda Webb is a Dr Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncturist and one of Dr Joe Dispenza’s Inner Health practitioners. She is the founder of Beattie Street Health in Sydney and has spent more than a decade working with the relationship between the body, health and meaningful change.

At the heart of Melinda’s work is an interest in what happens when we begin to recognise the familiar patterns through which we think, feel and act, reconnect with the body and create the space for something different to emerge. Sometimes, before we change what is growing in our lives, we need to tend to the ground beneath it.
