What Your Period Is Trying To Tell You: A TCM Perspective

What Your Period Is Trying To Tell You: A TCM Perspective

Your menstrual cycle is one of the most useful diagnostic tools we have in Chinese medicine. It gives real insight into how your body is functioning—how well you’re building and circulating blood, and how regulated your system is overall.

Rather than something to just manage each month, your period is feedback. When you know what to look for, the small shifts away from normal can tell you exactly where your body might need support.

A few of the more common things that we see in clinic:

Heavy Bleeding can mean your body isn’t holding blood as well as it should, or that things are moving too forcefully. Sometimes there’s also an element of heat or pressure in the system pushing the flow.

Light or No Bleeding usually means there isn’t enough blood being built in the first place, blood is not reaching the uterus effectively, or the hormones that tell the uterine lining to thicken during the cycle are not doing their job.

Irregular Cycle coming early, late, or changing month to month—is usually a sign that your system isn’t regulating smoothly. Mental load and stress are big factors in this, as they disrupt how things flow through the body.

Painful Periods are one of the clearest indicators that something isn’t flowing properly. In Chinese medicine, pain almost always comes back to stagnation—if things aren’t moving, you’ll feel it.

PMS symptoms like irritability, mood swings, or breast tenderness, are usually a sign of build-up before the period starts. Again, it comes back to movement—things aren’t flowing as smoothly as they could be in the lead-up to your cycle.

Clotty Periods are another sign that the flow isn’t as smooth as it should be. The darker and larger they are, the more it suggests that blood is pooling and coagulating rather than moving freely.

Exhaustion during your period is a sign that your body is already running low on reserves. This is especially common if your flow is also light.

Skin Changes around your cycle—like breakouts—often reflect internal imbalance, particularly around how your body is processing and clearing. Hormonal shifts can amplify this, but they’re usually not the root cause.

Cervical Mucus too much, too little, or inconsistent quality—tell how well fluids are being regulated in the body. If cervical mucus is consistently lacking, it often points to the body not having enough fluids or nourishment to support a healthy cycle.

If you’re trying to conceive, we look closely at cervical fluid and how it is relating to ovulation. If ovulation isn’t happening regularly, or cervical mucus is minimal, it usually means the body isn’t producing or moving fluids properly. From a Western perspective this is often described as a hormonal imbalance, but in Chinese medicine we see hormones as part of a bigger system. When the body is out of balance—whether that’s due to stress, poor energy flow, or not having enough resources—hormonal signals become irregular. Supporting the whole system is what brings those hormones back into rhythm.

Treatment should always focus on restoring balance—improving how things move while also making sure the body has enough resources to function well. We use acupuncture to regulate flow and circulation, reduce pain and support the nervous system.

We couple it with dietary suggestions that will help build and nourish. It might look like incorporating iron-rich foods and adequate protein, focusing on warm, easy-to-digest meals like soups and stews, and including supportive foods such as ginger, cinnamon, red dates, and goji berries. Small adjustments like reducing sugar and dairy, while adding more nourishing, whole foods, can make a noticeable difference over time.

We also take the time to look at lifestyle—nervous system response, encouraging gentle movement, and creating space for the body to slow down when needed. The goal is to support the body as a whole so that everything—from energy to hormones to the menstrual cycle—can regulate more smoothly.

Classic Chinese herbal formulas, used for centuries, are a rich adjunct to the above when regulating menstruation. Time honoured, these formulas move and nourish blood making for easier and healthier cycles.
