Is This Really Normal? Why Common Childhood Symptoms Are Often Signs Your Child’s Body Needs Support
If you’re a parent, you likely know very well that there’s a set of symptoms you can expect to develop at some stage in your child. Things like frequent infections blamed on childcare or school, eczema, constipation, reflux, and sleep problems have been given a reputation of just being a part of childhood.
While these issues are common, that doesn’t mean they’re normal or that your child’s body doesn’t need support. As a paediatric naturopath, my approach to children’s health is proactive, instead of reactive. We know there are a whole host of vulnerabilities that come with childhood and growing bodies (i.e., underdeveloped immune systems and gut microbiomes), and we can work with this knowledge to prevent these issues from forming in the first place.
Even better, is that a naturopathic approach is just as valuable for children who are already experiencing symptoms. Whether your child is frequently unwell, struggling with their gut, skin, sleep, or emotional regulation, a functional paediatric approach looks at why these patterns are developing and how to strengthen your child’s foundations. In working together to support your child’s developing systems, let’s look at what these challenges can indicate and how to approach them.
1. Frequent Infections: A Sign of Immune Stress
It’s no doubt that children are exposed to lots of germs, but frequent or lingering infections often indicate:
Immune system immaturity or overload, leading to weak and dysregulated defenses
Nutrient insufficiencies (think iron, zinc, vitamin D, protein)
Gut microbiome imbalances that can impair the immune system
Poor sleep or high physiological stress
In clinic, this means we often assess things like your child’s iron and zinc status, vitamin D levels, gut health patterns, sleep quality, and overall immune resilience. Support is focused on strengthening immune function, improving recovery between illnesses, and reducing the frequency of infections over time, rather than just waiting for the next virus to pass!
2. Constipation & Digestive Issues: A Gut That’s Not Thriving
Chronic constipation, reflux, bloating, or tummy pain are some of our strongest signs of ongoing functional health challenges in children.
They can often point to:
Gut microbiome imbalance
Food sensitivities
Low fibre or protein intake
Poor bile flow or digestive capacity
Nervous system stress affecting gut motility
Digestive health is foundational to immune health, nutrient absorption, and even emotional regulation. In practice, this means looking beyond fibre alone. We assess gut microbiome balance, food reactions, digestive capacity, nervous system tone, and dietary patterns to support more comfortable, regular digestion and reduce gut-driven inflammation.
3. Eczema, Rashes & Allergies: The Immune System on the Skin
Skin symptoms are one of the most visible ways a child’s immune and inflammatory systems communicate.
Persistent eczema or allergies often reflect:
Gut permeability and microbiome imbalance
Immune dysregulation
Food and environmental triggers
Inflammatory load
Nutrient needs (zinc, essential fatty acids, vitamin A, etc.)
Steroid creams may calm the skin temporarily, but they don’t address why the skin is reacting in the first place and can drive the problem down the line. Support here focuses on addressing underlying immune and gut drivers, reducing inflammatory load, supporting skin barrier function from the inside out, and identifying patterns that may be perpetuating flares.
4. Picky Eating: Sometimes a Symptom, Not a Personality Trait
Disruptive or long-term picky eating in kids can be driven by:
Sensory processing differences
Iron or zinc deficiency affecting appetite and taste
Gut discomfort
Food reactions
Poor digestive capacity
Food aversion is often a body-based response and not just a behavioural phase. A functional approach explores whether nutrient status, gut comfort, sensory processing, or digestive capacity are contributing, and supports both physiology and feeding patterns so that food becomes easier — not more stressful — over time
